On one hand, the industry is tired of the high resources and time required to produce AAA titles, as they can result in massive losses if they don’t sell well. This could be the reason why they described the game as the first quadruple-A game in a report to investors and then, before the release, to justify the high price tag (the game went on sale for USD 70).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Released in February 2024, Skull and Bones wasn\u2019t very successful in sales. The data on Steam<\/a> shows that the game has mixed reviews, with 32,9% negative reviews. Even if the development wasn\u2019t as high as rumored, Ubisoft won\u2019t recover money spent on the production. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Challenges in Developing AAAA Games<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ubisoft’s stock has significantly declined<\/a> in recent years, with the unsuccessful launch of Skull and Bones and some other games that didn\u2019t perform as well as expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, cost is not the only consideration. Tech innovations in recent years haven\u2019t been breakthrough enough to bring video games to a completely new level. The art of game development is perfected every year, but it\u2019s still the same AAA games, polished to shine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ubisoft claimed to have created a AAAA game to justify its price and got busted. Raising people’s expectations is a sure way to get lower reviews. This is not to say that higher expectations were the main cause of low reviews, but it certainly didn\u2019t work wonders, as may have been expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019ve seen publishers and developers name games AAAA and make fun of one another because of this. Karolina Gna\u015b, investor relations VP of CD Projekt Red, joked<\/a> that their next title would be AAAAA after Ubisoft\u2019s AAAA announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This story teaches us that simply \u201cnaming\u201d a game AAAA doesn\u2019t work. Game developers who want their titles to become the next big thing in the industry should work on creating the best game but expect praise from the audience and not from the CEOs. So, start by finding top game developers<\/a>, take calculated risks when adopting new ideas, and see what the gamers will say about the result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who knows, maybe in 1997, when the term AAA game was used for the first time, it wasn\u2019t perceived seriously either. However, with time, the term took its place in the industry.
